Now here's a mess.  About three years ago a developer dug foundations for two homes at the end of Sturno Drive in Centreville.  Then the builder went bankrupt.

What they left behind are large stagnant pools that are prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes.  The resident next door says that the bugs are so bad in the summer,  they can't go outside on their patio.

Residents also say they have been complaining to the Health Department for
three years, and nothing happens since no one will claim responsibilty.

CORRECTION (6/18/03): We have been informed that this situation has been known to the authorities for 3 MONTHS, not 3 years.  We aplologize for this error and
should also note that the Health Department has been working on the mosquito problem for the same length of time.
UPDATE 7/24/2003 - see next page for corrective action taken to drain these stagnant pools.
The picture on the right shows an abandoned well.  The good news is that it is in a fairly remote part of the watershed and well hidden.  The bad news is that it is a potential death trap for a child.  Which is why we reported it to the Fairfax County Health Department.

The well is a culvert pipe that has been sunk vertically into the ground.  An old pump is behind it but not pictured.  The pipe is 3' in diameter and covered with a fairly heavy lid.

According to the Health Department, this well was first reported in 1982, but at the time it was considered secured because of the lid.  However, recent massive development nearby means that in a few months (today's date is 6/16/2003), many more people will be exploring these woods.  So the Health Department now believes that the well should be filled in.  By the way, it is 13' deep and has 9' feet of water in it.  The top of the well water is about 4' below the top of the pipe, meaning that it would be very difficult for a child to get out of it.

We did lift the lid to look into it.  It looked normal, but you have to wonder if somehing macabre might be in it, long since sunk to the bottom.
