| May 24, 2007 – Sean Kallapos of Boy Scout Troop 577 completed a magnificent Eagle Scout Project on Saturday, May 19th. Sean and 24 volunteers, via about 100 man-hours, removed 3.95 TONS of loose asphalt along the trail on the west side of Little Rocky Run.
The flood of June 2006 had devastated the paved trail, stacking up large and small chunks of asphalt along a couple of hundred yards of the trail. This debris was not only unsightly, it was a safety hazard and rendered the trail almost unusable. Worse, in time it would have wound up in the creek itself. With muscle power and superb organization, Sean and his volunteers used wheelbarrows to haul the debris out to a rental cart. It was then transported to the I-95 Landfill near Lorton, the only Fairfax County facility that will take asphalt. Sequoia Management was kind enough to help with much of the funding, which exceeded $200.00 for dump fees, etc. Volunteers included: Kathy Kallapos, Keith Kallapos, John Bowden, Lance Bowden, Andrew McLenigan, Mike McLenigan, Brian McLenigan, David Hahn, Ned Foster, Chip Helme, Christopher Helme, Brian Bierwirth, Scott Bierwirth, JB Bierwirth, Greg Spitzer, Kathy Spitzer, Robert Kistner, Andre Hon, Joe Scott, Jim Scott, James Ritchey, Peter Smith, Eric Carlstrom, Brian Kallapos The local community owes a special thank-you to Sean and, as always, Boy Scout Troop 577. |
