Friends of Little Rocky Run
Fake Wetlands to the Landfill, Page 77
Every linear foot of the headwater sections of Little Rocky Run on the north side of U. S. 29 has been impacted by massive development.  At no time in the history of this watershed has the damage been so devastating, not even during the Civil War, when probably every tree within several miles of Centreville was cut down by the Confederate Army.

You would think that by now, the early 21st century, planners could do better.  What will all these new residents mean for traffic conditions in the Centreville area?  What will this development mean for Little Rocky Run, one of the sources of drinking water for Fairfax County residents?

Perhaps I can illustrate the lack of environmental planning by referring you to the proffers for Buckley's Reserve (see photo above, taken in June 2002 when the land clearing had just begun).  In one section* of the proffers, the issue of "Water Quality" is raised and it is suggested that "water quality benefits can be gained by minimizing impervious surfaces on the site."  The solution was to reduce the number of housing units
from 256 to 250!

The area in the photo you see above has been built over (see previous pages).  Even more housing is planned along U. S. 29 as I write this on December 31, 2003.
