| Friends of Little Rocky Run - Virtual Tour of Watershed, Page 40, The Wetlands, old Braddock Road to U. S. 29 | ||||||||||||||||||
| This is probably the most amazing section of Little Rocky Run. It is a true wetland, dammed and maintained by a very active beaver colony, and chock full of wildlife, especially birds. Somehow it perserveres despite being surrounded by townhomes, apartments, a major U. S. highway, and inundation by litterers. It is also clear that sometime in the past a large chunk of it was filled in by debris - see page 46. It is our belief that this wetland area is a huge asset to the Centreville area. Consider that tens of thousands of people go to Huntley Meadows Park every year to see the wetland created by beavers. The wetland in Centreville is no less spectacular especially considering where it is and that it continues to survive despite wholesale assault by development. It is time for the Fairfax community to start paying more attention to it. A few observation towers and a wooden walkway for nature hikes would be an outstanding contribution to the Centreville community. The following pages detail the course of the creek and the impounded area of water. It is very difficult to walk through this area (and not recommended), so the photographs are not always from the most artistic and panoramic perspective. The first photo shows the view from the bridge over old Braddock Road. There is a grocery cart from the Giant in it, placed there by vandals sometime in December 2002. It has since been removed and returned to the Giant on Union Mill Road. However, the photo is illustrative of the type of mindset that plagues the Little Rocky Run watershed - senseless littering and mindless development. Note the thick foliage that begins just past the footbridge. This is typical of this section of the creek. |
