| May 16, 2004 – Friends of Little Rocky Run and a group of volunteers planted 225 trees and shrubs on a site beside old Braddock Road on May 15th. All of the trees planted were native species and included Silky dogwood, Redosier dogwood, buttonbush, serviceberry, sycamore, swamp white oak, pin oak, elderberry, green ash, red maple, white fringetree, and black gum. The total cost of the project including trees, equipment, etc. was about $2,500.00, all of it provided by grant money from The Potomac Conservancy and the Fairfax County Water Authority. Volunteers kicked in about 200 free labor hours. An extraordinary amount of planning went into this project. FLRR’s Renee Kitt organized the planting, which included site planning, obtaining permits, logistics, and the rallying of volunteers. Bryan Seipp, Forester/Community Action Manager with The Potomac Conservancy, played a pivotal role in identifying a good site, organizing plant deliveries, and providing on-site management. The volunteers ranged in age from six to over sixty, most of them residents of the Little Rocky Run watershed, but some from other areas, including as far away as Marshall, Virginia. Despite muggy conditions, too many rocks (it isn’t called Little Rocky Run for nothing), and a temperature of about 90º, all 225 plants were in the ground and mulched in about four hours. All present were amazed that so many trees could be planted so quickly. Provident rain storms later that evening and the next morning were helpful as well. This planting was the first in a series of planned riparian buffer repair activities. They follow several years of cleaning trash out of the Little Rocky Run watershed, which are described on the FLRR web site in our Trash Log. The Friends of Little Rocky Run are proud and highly appreciative of the volunteers who gave up a Saturday to help repair and sustain a watershed that is under siege from development, especially along U. S. 29 in the Centreville area. |
