| Colin Maloney's Eagle Scout project volunteers used a special power saw to cut this eyesore up and haul it to the dump. | |||||||||||||||||||
| July 25, 2009 – Colin Maloney finished a spectacular clean up of a local dump site near the intersection of Rt. 28 and Compton Road. Decades of illegal dumping had resulted in an astonishing variety of trash and the creation of a really bad local eyesore. There were two cars there that locals say were actually wrecks that had occurred prior to the installation of a safety rail along a treacherous curve on Compton Road. In addition to the two cars, Colin and his numerous volunteers also hauled out 48 bags (some of them in the 50 lb. range), 34 tires, a washing machine, a refrigerator, and miscellaneous items too numerous to mention. The total weight, not counting the cars, was 2,553 lbs. Safety was a major concern since the access point was right on a blind curve. VDOT, who provided the trash bags, was also kind enough to loan Colin a couple of big "Caution: Road Crew" signs, but extreme care had to be taken to avoid on-coming cars. Just as worrisome was the use of a portable saw to cut the cars into manageable chunks. Fortunately nothing really bad happened, other than the usual cuts, bruises, and bug bites. Volunteers included: Colin, Dennis, Seamus, and Tracy Maloney; Evan Heflin; Spencer DeMars; Woo Young Moon; Timmy Galvin; Ryan and Val Vaughn; Mike and Brian McLenigan; Sam Muggleworth; Amar Desai; Chris and Nick Zempolich; Alex Witko; Alice Chae; Christopher Helme; Mr. and Mrs. Bierwirth; Anis Rashid; and Ned Foster. Special thanks to the good folks at Boulevard/All State Towing who were kind enough to haul away the really heavy stuff – car parts, a refrigerator, a washing machine, etc. They did this out of civic spirit and did not charge anything for their hard work. Disposal of some of these items, one of which weighed between 500 and 1,000 lbs., would have been very difficult without the help of these good people. The local community owes a special thank-you to Colin and, as always, Boy Scout Troop 577. |
