Friends of Little Rocky Run
May - June 2005 - Ben Messenger's Eagle Scout Project - Riparian Buffer Repair beside Braddock Road in the Little Rocky Run Watershed.
Judy Okay, State Urban Forester, and Ben Messenger.
Ben Messenger organized a riparian buffer repair of a badly eroded intermittent tributary beside Braddock Road.  This was phase 2 of a project that began with an earlier Eagle Scout project performed by Matt Duncan.  Ben's project involved placing a couple of tons of granite rock into step ponds, shown below, and planting a number of red twig dogwoods.

Judy Okay, State Urban forester, shown above, provided valuable on-site assistance.  Fairfax County's Stormwater Management provided the stones.  All expenses were funded by a grant received from the Navy Federal Credit Union.
Three different step ponds were dug, lined, and then filled with stones.  Judy Okay showed us where and how for each of them.  At the back of the picture to the left, you can barely see the project that was done on the other side of Little Rocky Run.  Less visible is the several tons of sediment that had collected in the creek as run-off from these two wet weather tributaries.
Troop 1371 volunteers included: Matt Brennan, Chris Cawley, Ned Foster, Daniel Hammer, Robbie Krieger, Jon Lopaki, Mr. Lopacki (Troop Scoutmaster), Calvin Messenger, Luke Messenger, Vickie Messenger, John Mclaren, Don Minner, Judy Okay, Justin Radican, Wes Roan, Ronnie Robinson, and Nick Steilper,
