Alice Ferguson Clean Up, March 31, 2007
When you do a clean up with volunteers, you can't be sure how many people will show up and in what order or how much trash will be collected.  Thus the two photos above.

There were some heroic actions committed by all of the participants, but several stand out.  In the picture at top left (Joan Lunsford, Eric Duncan, Amie Whitmore and Ned Foster in back, with Acacia and Denielle Whitmore in front), I want to call your attention to Eric Duncan.  Eric cleaned the section of creek behind the Little Rocky Run townhouses and also the woods next to the field beside Mountain View Elementary School.  This latter area was a maze of brambles and resulted in dozens of scratches and punctures from thorns.

The school field is the source of the trash, and FLRR is asking those responsible for the trash to take action to eliminate this eyesore.  We did not clean the field.

The group pictured on the right above (left to right: Mr. X - yes, we lost the sign-up sheet and this man was a true hero who was walking by and stayed to help us for several hours.  We do know that he is a health instructor and very fit and strong; characteristics that were huge assets to our efforts, Paul Iwatake, Terry Nelson, Walter Iwatake, Ned Foster, and Zack Fields) scoured the wetland area upstream from Braddock Road to U. S. 29.  (Not pictured anywhere is Lynn Foster, the photographer, who not only helped clean up, but served as the overall site manager directing volunteers to various locations).

Terry Nelson came all the way from Manassas to help us.  Zack Fields donated many hours both in the clean up and also in planning the work.  My special thanks go to Walter Iwatake who, thank goodness, showed up with a truck and hauled the bags, etc. to the County landfill.  We had no idea we would gather up 38 bags, so it helped immensely to haul the stuff away, even if it did cost us $30.00.

The two groups above hauled out 38 bags, 100 sq. feet of vinyl siding, 3 tires, and a five gallon container of motor oil.  The oil was properly disposed of at the hazardous waste section of the County landfill.  Cub Scout Pack 1859 (thanks Christina Nelson!) cleaned the stormwater pond beside Union Mill Elementary School, and Anne Brodeur led a clean up in the Green Trails area.  All together 52 bags were hauled out.

Thanks to all of these wonderful people who gave their time (and even blood) to make this such a successful clean up.
And special thanks to Acacia and Denielle Whitmore!
