| The annual Alice Ferguson Potomac Watershed clean-up is on April 9, 2011. The Friends of Little Rocky Run, a locally based conservation group, always takes part in this event. This year’s target is the Willow Springs Branch of Little Rocky Run which winds its way through the Hampton Forest neighborhood. This branch is the only remaining feeder stream in the Little Rocky Run watershed that has not been cleaned at least once.
We plan to muster at 9:00AM on April 9th near the storm water pond on Ashleigh Road. From there we will send teams in different directions. Note that some directions are more challenging than others. The clean up officially lasts for three hours and, based on past clean ups, will probably result in a prodigious amount of trash getting picked up. At the mustering location volunteers will sign in and be provided with gloves, bags, and some with a limited number of pick up tools. Trash will be brought back to the mustering point, and possibly other locations, for same day hauling to the Ox Road Landfill. Refreshments will also be provided, but please feel free to bring your own. Snack donations to the group will be gladly accepted. Bugs will probably not be a problem, but there will be some issues with brambles and squishy ground, so we recommend long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and appropriate shoes or boots. This is a fun event and a very worthy undertaking. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by one or both parents. Severe weather could cause this event to be postponed to the following weekend. Of interest is that we have wanted to clean the Willow Springs Branch for about ten years. The Little Rocky Run watershed has approximately 23 miles of main and feeder channels so it has taken this long to get there. About five years ago, we were successful in getting the good folks at Willow Springs Towing to remove those two 1946 Plymouths that used to be in the woods near the entrance to Hampton Forest. But this is all we have done. We will probably make a couple of preliminary trips to clean the area on the other side of US 29 and also at least make an attempt to remove the ancient car wreck on the downstream bank below Hampton Forest Way. (Anyone know anything about this wreck?) DIRECTIONS: From US 29 head for Hampton Forest Way, which is between Clifton/Stringfellow Road and the Fairfax County Parkway. Hampton Forest Way is almost directly opposite the Kate Hanley Shelter. Turn onto Hampton Forest Way, go about .2 mile and turn left on Ashleigh Road. Go about .1 mile and you will see us set up near a large storm water pond. If you need help finding us, call Ned Foster’s cell phone # - 703-943-9987.
